About the Farm
Welcome to Bittersweet Blessings Farm!
Your hosts: Elizabeth & Jeff
As you scroll around and check out our site we’d like to introduce ourselves and tell you a bit about how our adventure on this farm came to be. Elizabeth, growing up as a ‘city girl’ between Racine, WI & Phoenix, AZ, farm life was not her idea of ideal living. She does however love the old crafts and workings of ‘Primitives’. Warn & weathered, rusty and dinged up, the more-so the better. When first visiting the farm, Elizabeth came to love the old farmhouse style of the house and the construction of the barn and outbuildings. From that first visit while sitting on the grass taking a break behind the barn, Elizabeth found peace at the farm. Even more so, Elizabeth loves Jeff.
Jeff grew up on a small family farm in central WI. Since moving away in 1981, he has always longed for the opportunity to someday again be living back on a farm.
Having lived in Deerfield for over 20 years, and driven past the Zickert Farm thousands of times, they both new well of the farm. The Zickert Farm (Vernon and Margaret) was known throughout southern WI for the tremendous fruit produced by the orchard on the farm. The family (Holzhueter/Zickert) of the farm goes back 170 years to when Christian Holzhueter built the farm for his family. Upon Vernon’s passing in 2016 the farm was held in estate by his 5 daughters, LouAnn, RoxAnn, Annola, Annita, SueAnn whom decided to put the farm up for sale in 2017.
Welcome Elizabeth and Jeff…Upon viewing the farm realized it provided the opportunity for each of them to achieve some lifelong dreams:
Farm/country living, yet close to city life.
Active farming
Wildlife habitat for hunting & recreation
Farmhouse living
Possibility of operating ‘Horse rescue’ facility
Create venue for public events
Provide pumpkins and fall decorations at reasonable prices, so that families can afford the joys of harvest season.
Construct workshop for the creation of primitives to supply with products.
Manage and harvest an apple orchard.
Create a store/shop to sell products made by My Bittersweet Blessings, the Deerfield Primitives & Whatnot Shop.
Some of these things, like the Deerfield Market Expo, the Deerfield Apple Festival, and the Pumpkin patch have already come to fruition, while other are still a work in progress. Please check back often to see what’s new.
